Taking Steps to Reduce Your Tinnitus Symptoms

Many people are really bothered by tinnitus, especially people who listen to a lot of loud music. There are many ways you can reduce the annoying noise in your ears. You do need to understand the condition and know what the triggers and aggravators are in your particular instance.

Take a closer look at your diet and evaluate if it has any effect on your tinnitus. Many people find that caffeine, alcohol or excess salt will make their tinnitus worse. Keep a daily journal and include everything you eat, when you get exercise (mild or vigorous), how you feel throughout the day and how much sleep you’re getting to see if there is any correlation between the worsening of your symptoms and any of these factors. This should give you a good idea whether your diet is affecting your condition.

Focus on lowering stress levels and see if this will help with your tinnitus. Avoid stressful situations if you can, and teach yourself coping methods if you get caught up in one. Another excellent stress reduction technique is meditation.

If you are experiencing a ringing in your ears, you must not allow yourself to panic. Many times, tinnitus is only temporary. Only a small percentage of cases are long-term or permanent issues. Use all available resources about the condition and set an appointment to speak with your doctor. It is possible that the condition will simply go away within a few days.

Download our free 250 page tinnitus book. It covers every aspect of tinnitus including all the major symptoms of tinnitus, the causes, how stress affects it, dietary considerations and much much more. Join support groups, check out the American Tinnitus Association websites, call our toll free number for assistance or email us.

See your doctor. When you first being to notice tinnitus symptoms, it might worry you, so consulting a doctor for a proper diagnosis is crucial. Only a certified physician can tell you for sure what you’re dealing with. Your doctor is also going to have tests done that can tell you whether you have additional health concerns that might be causing your tinnitus.

Tinnitus is something that will make you feel as though you are losing your mind. If your tinnitus is preventing you from sleeping, some background noise can help to muffle the ringing or distract your mind from it. Try turning on a fan or playing some soft, calming music, and see if that helps you get to sleep more easily.

If you suffer from tinnitus, you might want to take magnesium. Magnesium has been shown to relieve tinnitus symptoms, especially in high doses. Consult with your health care provider to see if you are an eligible candidate for this kind of treatment. If you prove to be healthy enough to try this treatment, follow your doctor’s orders for your dosages.

You might find this advice unhelpful or annoying; however, staying calm is important for managing tinnitus. The stress and anxiety felt during a panic attack can worsen tinnitus symptoms. Tinnitus isn’t a serious condition, nor is it a symptom of something worse. While the condition is certainly unpleasant, there is no need to worry.

Try to concentrate on relaxing when you lay down and forget about the tinnitus when you are falling asleep. Think of the term relax and keep repeating it to yourself. Change the appearance of your relaxing word, such as the color, shape, and size in your imagination. This pulls more of your focus to the word and leaves a smaller amount to be bothered by the tinnitus.

Music can really help to mask the noise of tinnitus, giving you some temporary relief. Choose a station or cd that has soothing sounds and no vocals to allow you to concentrate on what you need to do, instead of the song. Soothing music will calm the tinnitus, while also allowing you to concentrate on the task at hand.

Visualizing yourself doing something like lying down in a wheat field will help you fall asleep if you cannot do so because of tinnitus. Think about the sound the wheat makes as it rustles about, and complete the visualization with birds and clouds in the sky. Picture yourself floating up to the sky and flying high above the ground where you see the beauty of nature everywhere. That should give you amazing dreams!

Think back to when your tinnitus started, and remember whether you also began a prescription regimen at the same time. Tinnitus is a side effect of many medications, so ceasing that prescription might just end your audio misery. If you are able to, in conjunction with a doctor, try quitting taking each drug one at a time to see if it helps.

Some Tinnitus Tips

Tinnitus is defined as a constant noise in your ear that may be temporary, or may be persistent. It doesn’t cause any pain, but it can still wreck your life by depriving you of sleep, or interfering with your work. Determining what has caused the tinnitus, in addition to using the strategies found in this article, can help you minimize the symptoms associated with the condition.

Airplanes, construction environments and industrial machinery are but a handful of examples of the kinds of loud noise exposure that over time leads to tinnitus. If you happen to work in a loud environment, don’t quit your job, wear earplugs.

If you begin to develop any symptoms of tinnitus, you may want to see an Ears, Nose, and Throat Specialist or Audiologist. These two kinds of doctors are trained in dealing with tinnitus, so they would be able to both diagnose the condition as well as properly treat it.

Tinnitus Masking

You can produce white sound in the background by turning on the fan to your furnace or air conditioning unit. Place fans throughout your house, or a meditation fountain for instance. By filling your home with pleasingly distracting sounds, your mind can focus on something other than your tinnitus. Then you’ll only have to worry about the ringing in your ears when you’re away from home, in which case, you’re probably so busy that it isn’t very bothersome, anyway.

If you suffer from tinnitus, always wear ear plugs every time you go swimming. Swimming can lead to water entering the ear canal, and that can worsen tinnitus symptoms. You might also need to use ear plugs in the shower to prevent symptoms from worsening.

If the cause of your tinnitus is related to loud noise, it is important for you to wear either ear plugs or ear muffs to protect your ears when you are in situations where there is loud noise. By utilizing these protective devices, you are proactively fighting the chance of serious damage being inflicted on your ears.

Take The Time To Relax

Take frequent walks. Fresh air might do you well, and being active should help you relax. When walking, try keeping track of how your environment influences your tinnitus. Your symptoms might be exacerbated by certain noises, such as moving cars or construction work. Write down all sounds that negatively affect your tinnitus, and then take steps to avoid these sounds.

If you are experiencing a ringing in your ears, you must not allow yourself to panic. Tinnitus is usually only temporary or lasts a short period of time. It isn’t usually a lifelong condition. Plan on researching and managing your condition, and consult a medical professional, but also be aware it might just go away on its own as fast as it showed up.

If you wake up in the middle of the night and get out of bed, or you’re having trouble calling asleep, you should get up and do something really boring. Engaging in something, fun or helpful, like doing chores, will make your mind believe that not sleeping is a positive thing. Instead engage in something you hate so you don’t want to have to do it again.

If you are studying and tinnitus is bothering you, try using a radio or television for background noise. While it may be distracting, it may be better than the ringing in your ears! The background noise will mask the tinnitus so you can focus on the task at hand.

If tinnitus sounds are keeping your awake, imagine that you are lying in the middle of a wheat field. Imagine that you are hearing the wheat moving slightly in the wind, birds flying overhead and clouds passing over you. Imagine yourself floating up to the sky, appreciating all the nature that is around you. Your dreams should be quite magnificent following this.

Rule out various causes for your tinnitus. Some are very simple, such as tight muscles in your neck and shoulders. Visit a chiropractor for an evaluation. Jaw problems can also cause tinnitus, and a dentist can easily realign your jaw in some cases to remove the cause and relieve your tinnitus.

You can often find a distraction from your tinnitus symptoms by playing music on an instrument. The most effective instrument is woodwind or brass, they get rid of the most tinnitus noise.

There are medications that can be helpful for tinnitus sufferers. The same drugs that effectively treat depression and anxiety have been proven to help alleviate tinnitus symptoms as well. Consult your doctor about whether or not these types of medications might be suitable for you. Medication along with cognitive therapy, or biofeedback therapy can be extremely effective to reduce your symptoms.

Stick to a strict sleep schedule. Routine is the best medicine for tinnitus sufferers. Get up in the morning and go to bed at night at the same time each day, including holidays and weekends. This may seem redundant, but it is the key to avoid lying in bed at night awake.

Tinnitus is a mysterious but very real affliction. Understanding what causes your tinnitus is the first step in dealing with this condition that causes discomfort to many of those afflicted with it. Although it is not a disease, the underlying causes can make it difficult to deal with the symptoms. Using the the tips below, you can identify what is causing your tinnitus and work on ways to experience relief from the symptoms.

Consistent exposure to loud noise is one of the major causes of tinnitus. Well after the noise is gone, people will experience ringing and other noises that are not from external sources. If you are working where there are lots of loud noises present, it is common to experience tinnitus well after the workday is done.

Blockages from ear wax and dirt can result in tinnitus. The earwax or dirt can be lodged deep in the ear canal so it is best to go to a doctor to have it removed. Never stick objects in your ear to try to clear blockages. This could result in damage to the eardrum or push the blockages further inside the ear canal causing more blockage.

On occasion the ear bone will experience abnormal growth. This can cause restrictions of the sound waves within the ear canal and lead to tinnitus.

On occasion stress and depression cause tinnitus. Oftentimes, people who experience tinnitus will have the symptoms of depression and stress, but other times the depression and stress will actually cause the tinnitus. Prolonged tinnitus has been known to cause musical hallucinations, irritability, and fatigue.

Head and neck injuries have been known to cause tinnitus. The human body is complex, and injuries to these areas can cause the tinnitus to appear from shock to the body, pinched nerves in the neck, and fluid build up from head trauma.

Blood pressure and other blood diseases can cause a person to experience tinnitus. This is called pulsatile tinnitus. It is objective in nature and is caused by increased blood turbulence or altered blood flow within the ear. The person may be able to perceive increased awareness of their blood flow within the ear canal. It has been known to be a symptom of carotid artery aneurysm which is a potentially life-threatening condition.

Click For Exposure to Noise Tinnitus Treatment

Some medications will cause temporary tinnitus. Aspirin and some antibiotics may cause subjective tinnitus. There are over 250 medications that list tinnitus as one of the side effects when there is no underlying physical cause involved. These are usually temporary, and when the medication is stopped, the tinnitus goes away as well.

There are many diseases in which tinnitus is a side effect. Meniere’s disease, multiple sclerosis, thyroid disease, Lyme disease, and fibromyalgia have all been known to cause tinnitus to some degree.

Exposure to lead and mercury have been linked to tinnitus. People who have been exposed to these two heavy metals have been known to experience tinnitus of various levels.

The tips above should help you identify the causes of tinnitus so that you can narrow down what is causing your symptom. The main thing to consider is that many of the causes of tinnitus are very serious and life-threatening diseases and afflictions, so if you are experiencing tinnitus, you need to visit your doctor immediately to find out its cause and eliminate any serious problems.
